What’s the Ketogenic diet & why should I care?
Did you know the Ketogenic diet is tied into brain health, and can benefit those with diabetes and degenerative brain disease? Find out a brief background, what the Ketogenic diet is, and who should be on it in the following article.
Ketogenic diet background
In the 1920’s the Ketogenic (Keto) diet was used as a treatment for childhood seizures. It was discovered that the Keto diet is more effective than most medications for children with seizures. If that isn’t impressive, recent research is showing that the Keto diet can also help reverse Type 2 diabetes. Does this mean you or a loved one should be on a Keto diet?
What type of food do I eat on a Keto diet?
The Keto diet consists of a high healthy fat diet with very low carbohydrate (carbs) intake, and moderate amounts of protein.
- Nuts (almonds, walnuts, or pistachios)
- Sardines and Mackerel 🐟
- Wild caught Salmon 🐟
- Avocado oil, olive oil and coconut oil
- Grass fed meats
Which carbs should I eat?
You should be obtaining carbohydrates from fibrous non starchy veggies such as: asparagus, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, kale, collard greens, and other leafy green vegetables. If you do not eat enough veggies and fiber while on the Keto diet, it can cause digestive issues (and no one wants that!).
Who should be on a Keto diet?
Those who are overweight, diabetic, insulin resistant, suffering from post concussion syndrome, or have degenerative brain disease (like early onset Dementia, Alzheimers, or Parkinsons Disease) may benefit from being on a Ketogenic diet
Dr. Ernesto Medina says, “I don’t think the Keto diet is for everyone. I always recommend personalized blood testing before starting any nutrition or diet program to see what would be a good fit for an individual”.
