Functional Neurology Approach for Post-Concussion Symptoms

Did you know you don’t have to lose consciousness or hit your head to have a concussion

A simple whiplash injury—common in motor vehicle accidents—can be enough to trigger post-concussive symptoms.

Common post-concussion symptoms:

  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Trouble focusing or reading
  • Shortened attention span

Difference between Conventional Medical approach and Functional Neurology approach:

Conventional Medical approach

Conventional medicine will often prescribe pain killers, migraine medication, or anti-nausea medication to try to manage the symptoms. This can help short term. If symptoms last longer than one month, the root cause of the problem is not being addressed. As a result, symptoms may never resolve!

Currently there are no definitive imaging or diagnostic tests that exist to confirm if someone has had a concussion or not. Diagnosis is largely based on symptoms, which can be very subjective.

Functional Neurology approach

A detailed neurological exam will test for deficiencies between balance and coordination, and speed and accuracy of eye movements. Each one of those systems—when out of sync with each other—can cause chronic symptoms that are often experienced after a concussion.
