5 Health Secrets for Autoimmune Patients (Video)
Dr. Ernesto Medina joined Christine from the Lupus Foundation of Northern California to discuss 5 health secrets for autoimmune patients. This article provides a brief overview of the video they produced. You can watch the 50 minute video at the end of this article.
What is functional medicine?
“Essentially it’s a paradigm shift in the way health care providers are trained. We are Trained to investigate into the root cause of a disease, rather than just manage a symptom”. –Dr. Ernesto Medina
This is something that is practiced throughout the United States. The most common fields that practice functional medicine are chiropractors, acupuncturists, medical doctors and biochemists. Extra time outside of school and the work field is required to further their education and understanding of functional medicine.
Bay Area Health and Wellness Center’s primary clientele
Women who have uncontrolled and chronic thyroid issues, especially those with autoimmune low thyroid issues like Hashimoto’s, uncontrolled Diabetes, early onset Dementia, and more. Most of our patients have already been through the mainstream health field and have not been provided with enough details, a natural and individualized plan, or simply want to get to the root cause of their symptoms.
Topic 1: There are no autoimmune specialists in our healthcare system (~10 minutes)
This is essentially a new growing epidemic. At least 80 different types of autoimmune diseases have been discovered, and new ones are being identified all the time. In the mainstream health field, the specialist you get assigned to depends on your symptoms and disease presentation. For example, Lupus falls under the category of Rheumatology, Hashimoto’s falls under Endocrinology, and Crohn’s Disease falls under Gastroenterology. The problem is, these specialists are taught to help patients manage symptoms, not fight the actual disease or find the root cause. Learn more about how the Bay Area Health and Wellness Center can help autoimmune diseases in Dr. Medina’s video below.
Topic 2: Causes of autoimmune disease (~20 minutes)
- Toxic Chemicals
- Plastics (like non-stick lining of pans, tupperware, BPA in plastics)
- Lead in tap water
- Dietary Components
- Food sensitivities (days or weeks after being exposed to a food)
- Food proteins (can cause inflammatory issues in the intestines)
Topic 3: The role of genetics and our environment (~28 minutes)
Genetics play a ⅓ role, and our environment plays a ⅔ role in contribution to autoimmunity. Therefore, genetics do not determine that a patient will for sure obtain an autoimmune disease. Things like food additives and food preservatives has caused an exponential increase of autoimmune disease.
Topic 4: Food (~38 minutes)
“Foods have a profound effect on autoimmunity and strengthening the immune system. Certain food proteins can leak through the intestinal lining into the bloodstream, and the immune system recognizes that as a foreign invader. The immune system then creates a response to attack and destroy that food protein. Now, proteins are made up of amino acid chains, and those chains can mimic other tissues within our body. These can lead to specific autoimmune diseases”. –Dr. Ernesto Medina
Dr. Medina discusses a study where certain foods (soybean, corn, spinach, and carrots) can cause issues for those with Lupus. This is around the 41 minutes mark in the following video.
